About the Consulate

The creation of the Consulate General in Philipsburg reflects the significant Dominican community in Sint Maarten, which constitutes approximately 10.2% of the island's population. The consulate provides essential services such as visa processing, assistance to Dominican nationals, and the promotion of diplomatic and economic relations between the Dominican Republic and Sint Maarten.

The establishment of the consulate underscores the historic and continuing migratory and economic ties between the two regions. Many Dominicans have moved to Sint Maarten in search of better economic opportunities, contributing to the island's demographic diversity.

Historical Context

The relationship between the Dominican Republic and Sint Maarten has evolved significantly over time, driven primarily by migration, economic ties and diplomatic agreements. Historically, the Dominican Republic has focused its diplomatic efforts on the circum-Caribbean region, which includes Sint Maarten.

Economic Ties

Trade and economic cooperation have been instrumental in strengthening this relationship. The Dominican Republic and Sint Maarten engage in bilateral trade, exchanging a variety of products, which has been beneficial to both economies and has fostered mutual growth and development.

Diplomatic Agreements

The diplomatic relationship has been formalized through several agreements and memoranda of understanding. For example, in 2016 a historic agreement was signed to enhance cooperation between the Dominican Republic and the Kingdom of the Netherlands, which includes Sint Maarten. This agreement seeks to foster collaboration in multiple aspects, including economic, cultural and social.

In 2019, another significant agreement was signed to boost economic opportunities, with a particular focus on improving air services between the two regions. This agreement was expected to boost tourism and business travel, thus strengthening economic ties.
